The Unemployment Situation In New York State
New York State is situated in the north eastern region of the United States. It is bordered by Canada, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Massachusetts and Connecticut. Albany is the capital city of the state. New York State is the third most populated state in the country.
New York City is the largest city of the state. It is the most prominent financial, cultural, transportation, and manufacturing center of the country.
There has been a significant decline in the manufacturing industries of the state. Yet it has retained some important ones such as printed materials, apparel, food products, machinery, chemicals, paper, electrical equipment, computer equipment, optical instruments and cameras, sporting goods, and transportation equipment. But the main share of the jobs of this state is from the service sector.
New York State also exports a wide variety of goods such as foodstuffs, commodities, minerals, computers and electronics, cut diamonds, and automobile parts.
In spite of it being the commercial and the financial leader, the state went into recession in August 2008. About 263,500 private sector employees lost their jobs as an aftermath. A great amount of unemployment has been seen since then.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 8.6 percent in November 2009. As per the statistics on January 2010, the unemployment rate reached 9.0 percent. The unemployment rate had never reached this high in the last twenty six years. In New York City alone, the leisure and hospitality sector cut down 2,400 jobs in December when hotels and restaurants would have usually added to their staffs.
New York State has many banks, financial firms and institutions and experts believe that the downfall of the banking industry has led to the rise in the unemployment rate of the state. The job losses have been happening throughout the state. But there have been job additions in accounting, construction and leisure and hospitality even though that did not affect the unemployment rate much.
But there has been a gleam of hope from the news that the economy of the United States in the second quarter has slowed down at a much lesser pace than expected, and thus has given rise to hopes of its taking a turn towards the positive tu

rn in the future. So if that happens, it would definitely bring better results for the New York State’s unemployment situation.
